Impressive achievement: Na Tra 2 and revenue fever
Since the launch of the Lunar New Year, Na Tra 2 has continuously broken the revenue records. The film quickly exceeded 9 billion yuan (about US $ 1.23 billion) and is expected to reach 16 billion yuan (about 2.1 billion USD). This is not only a remarkable achievement in the Chinese market but also a testament to the attraction of domestic cinema, marking a big step in the billion -dollar film industry.

Na Tra's success is an important milestone for Chinese animation, but that does not mean that this industry has solved systematic issues.
From Journey to the West: Return to Na Tra: Ma Dong Hai (2025), the phrase “The rise of Chinese animation” has been shouted many times. But in the end, the audience received was poor quality films.
Many people praised Na Tra 2 box office, but looking back, the total revenue of Chinese animation in 2024 was only 2,875 billion yuan, of which nearly 2 billion yuan came from Boonie Bears: reversing time. The whole year only had two domestic films beyond the 1 billion milestone and the same period had 15 imported animated films through this milestone.

But after more than a decade of development, the number of Chinese cartoons exceeding the 100 million yuan milestone every year still fluctuates around 3-4 works. The prosperity or decline of Chinese animation over the past years depends entirely on a few leading companies.
According to Blue Whale Finance, from 2019 up to now, the domestic cartoon market is mainly decided by three large companies: Enlight Media (Quang Tuyen), Huaqiang Fangte and Light Chaser Animation.
If all three companies are stable or released cult works, that year the overall revenue of Chinese animation will not be bad. If there are only two, even a company that maintains form, the whole industry will fall into a gloomy scene. Data shows that from 2019 until now, these three companies contributed over 85% of the total domestic cartoon revenue, the lowest also accounted for 62.28% in 2021.
Looking back, 2019 and 2023 are the two most brilliant times with revenue reaching 7.104 billion yuan and 5,027 billion yuan respectively, all thanks to the contribution of these three big men.
In 2019, Quang Tuyen launched Na Tra: Ma Dong Giang (5,035 billion yuan), Huaqiang Fangte launched Boonie Bears: Primary era (717 million yuan), and Light Chaser Animation with Bach Xa: Duyen Xu (469 million yuan ). In total, three films collected 6,221 billion yuan, accounting for 87.57% of the total domestic cartoon revenue.
Similarly, in 2023, four films of the three firms collected 4.622 billion yuan, accounting for 91.94% of the industry's revenue.
In contrast, in 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2024, the market was gloomy when there was a lack of blockbuster from three big men.
Obviously, Na Tra 2 alone cannot change the situation. Chinese animation needs more single breakthroughs, towards a sustainable, diverse and really depth production system.
